Re: Rasterbar example

I'm new to the rasterbar concept and have started learning assembler on the Atari STe. I've read a article mentioned in one of the topics that gave a loose example on timer b rasterbars, but it's missing some code that allows it to run. I hacked together something that assembles and promptly crashe...

Re: I got my 1040STfm but there's problems - Need help!

After started the machine, it shows me white screen and is trying to load floppy long time even there's none. This is normal. The ST assumes that most of the time, you'll be booting up something from a disk of some kind, so it waits for a while to make sure it had a chance to do that. Some time lat...

Re: malloc /gemdos $48...restriction to 32768 bytes?

32767 is the maximum value you can store in signed 16-bit format. The GEMDOS malloc call takes a 32-bit number as the size of the chunk to allocate. I don't have an ST to hand right now, but I suspect you're doing something wrong - perhaps using an OS call in GFA without the L: context? Perhaps not ...

For me, it was all about blackcurrant liquorice, chocolate lime, lemon sherbet and toasted teacakes. Later I got into sugared almonds and iced caramels. Now I'm into mega sours and chewy violets, I get them from a little shop in York on Low Petergate.

The main issue is that I've just moved house, so the priority at the moment is to have less stuff, not more - I think I'll be wanting to clean up and find good homes ASAP for anything I end up collecting.

Re: How to transfer files from pc to vanilla 520 ste

With an empty formatted floppy only in the ste, is there any way to copy stuff over from pc via usb-serial without also needing a transfer utility on the ste floppy first? There isn't anything in the ST's operating system that has this functionality. You'll need to load up some specific software fr...

Re: Help getting started

Going on the file extension, the .stx file is a Pasti image of a floppy disk. You should use the Steem floppy disk window to insert it into A: and boot from it. You will likely need pasti.dll from http://pasti.fxatari.com/ . According to http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10756. you ...

Re: Convert Atari plain text ASCII to PC ASCII

Just by way of information, I did some investigation in Linux. There is a program called iconv that provides an interface to a conversion library, but it only supports the Atari ST character set if the program is compiled with support for "extra encodings". The version that comes on ubuntu...

Re: renaming files with 'special' characters ?

The TOS routines for renaming a file are likely to restrict the characters that it will put into the entry on the disk. People tend to use a sector-editor to make unusual filenames. It should be pretty easy to locate the right entry and get it back - although as Mug suggests you could edit the progr...

Re: xbios(5) is this a correct use of command?

Seems workable. You could wait for a vbl before doing the screen update, otherwise you've no idea where in the scan you are. Also, in your program, you could use better variable names. There is nothing to be gained these days from:

Code: Select all

a%=XBIOS(3)

Compared to:

Code: Select all

logical_screen%=XBIOS(3)

On Linux it should be just fine reading, writing and even formatting a single-sided disk. You won't be able to copy a whole menu disk to it but you might get a game or two on it. I'd thoroughly recommend for the long term getting hold of a double-sided drive or going straight for an SD card interfac...

We had a thing in York a couple of years back, it was pretty quiet but good fun. A lot of us go to various retro shows and meet up that way, but I'd be willing to host a meet in York at some point again. Pretty busy until January though.

Not sure about the PAL/NTSC identification. I do recall that 2600 and 5200 are incompatible but most 2600 games will work on the 7800. Hope that helps.
