Re: Mega STe PSU replacement with Flex ATX

Do the modern PSUs make these Atari systems fanless? Is it safe to use that way?

Re: Satandisk (v4) - Trouble writing files (bad DMA Chip?)

Well I didn't get a reply, but these P.Putnik images were clearly not burning correctly. Maybe there was some kind of burn setting that was left out of the instructions. Either way, I demoed an alternate driver software and I was able to produce my own 'blank card' that does boot and does allow me t...

Re: Satandisk (v4) - Trouble writing files (bad DMA Chip?)

Hi Edu, I did send you email about the same time because I thought maybe other user experience could help too. You mention other users with the same behavior. And they were able to fix it? I tried everything you suggested. DISKPART, SD Formatter, and "cleaning contacts", yet the re...

Satandisk (v4) - Trouble writing files (bad DMA Chip?)

So I recently purchased Satandisk v4 from Arananet. (NOT Ultrasatan) https://www.arananet.net/pedidos/product/satandisk-v4/ My system is STe with 4Mb and TOS 1.62 I've downloaded both the suggested images (PPs and RetroWiki) configured for 1Gb and 2Gb SD cards from that page. Both images use PP's HD...

Re: psu.why & how to replace the dreaded capacitors in ATARI

Well I found the ASP34-1 schematic HERE and noticed a few things. 1) The small cap C9 at the bottom of my pic is 100uF 25V 2) Cap C7, C14, C15 on my PSU are 330uF V35 - The schematic shows them as 25V. That should be ok, correct? 3) Cap C17 on my PSU is 2200uF 16V - But the schematic shows it to be ...

Re: psu.why & how to replace the dreaded capacitors in ATARI

Thanks exxos, Is there any way of knowing if my PSU caps are the problem, or do I just assume it is because it's so old? Do I only need to replace the caps, or also the BU508 transistor that you mentioned? Regarding the caps themselves, is it best to choose the exact match for the cap, or all caps f...

Re: psu.why & how to replace the dreaded capacitors in ATARI

exxos, I of course read that web page first, but it's not the same power supply as mine. ASP34-1 Rev6 vs ASP34-2 Rev5. Yours has somewhat different caps than I what I found on mine. Plus yours is the UK model as you mentioned, but mine is the US. That's why I posted a photo to see if someone could s...

Re: psu.why & how to replace the dreaded capacitors in ATARI

As I mentioned in this post , I've been having problems with getting a solid image from the VGA cable on my 4mb 1040STe. After seeing this thread I decided to take a look at my PSU. It's a model ASP34-1. I'll include the picture below. I'm really no expert at soldering, however I did replace the cap...

Re: CosmosEx - new device for your Atari ST

Is there any reason to still buy an Ultrasatan now that CosmosEx is out?
I'm looking online and it seems that they both cost about the same for external.

Maybe Ultrasatan is a bit simpler to use with less features, and more mature firmware.
Anything I'm missing?

Re: MiST and MIDI questions

I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. If MiST really does work 100 percent like a real Atari Ste with perfect timing and enhanced resolution I'll be picking one up. To think of all the money and time I've spent trying to get the real hardware functioning in a usable state in 2015. If this had ...

Re: ste monitor issues

Hello. I too have a problem with getting a solid image from my 1040STe. I only use monochrome mode to VGA monitors. I have tried two separate VGA cables and multiple CRT/LCD monitors, and the problem is always the same. On boot-up, the monitor will "auto adjust" to the image. And it will l...

Re: Mouse extender cable?

I would suggest PM'ing TechieAlison and asking her to make you one her PeST's. She will make your cable as long as you want. Plus you can use a PS2 mouse; saving your Atari mouse for prosperity. Plus a modern PS2 is far superior, it will change your user experience . Appreciate the advise. I didn't...

Re: Silencing a Mega ST2

If you're worried about overheating you can try running the fan at 5V. Or replace it with a new, quiet fan. Not very worried as long as people that have disabled the fan have not had a problem. I'm not much of a technician. I see the fan power is soldered directly into the PSU. Can I just clip the ...

Re: Silencing a Mega ST2

I can confirm, that the Mega1 has no fan. But according to the label on it, its output is 40W while the Mega4 has 50W (+25%). Also the heatsink on the Mega1 is bigger than on the Mega4. Oh darn. Now I'm kind of back where I started. Well, assuming I'm not actually using extra power (with any expand...

Re: Silencing a Mega ST2

I think there is no difference between the Mega1, Mega2, Mega4 concerning energy consumption and heat production. I just confirm, that the PSU in my Mega4 really got hot when I removed the fan. I didn't want to let it go that way. Maybe I'm too careful ... Look here: http://www.old-computers.com/mu...

Re: Silencing a Mega ST2

I had a Mega4 once, and it didn't have a fan. I had an IDE-interface and a 3.5" drive in there as well. No problems with overheating. Nice, that's what I wanted to hear. Anyone else try this? I've got a stock ST2 and I'd like to just unplug the fan and be done with it. I'm willing to take the ...

The external PSU sounds nice, but maybe complicated because I don't have the custom wire. Regarding finding a 'silent' fan. Does anyone know the specs of the fan inside the ST2? Would something like this work? http://cgi.ebay.com/Delta-40mm-x-20mm-12V-Fan-Quiet-26-dBA-7-1CFM-40-mm_W0QQitemZ190195607...

Silencing a Mega ST2

Trying to use this computer to write MIDI music and the fan noise is driving me up the wall. :x Any known method to getting these units silent? Why was the ST1 fanless and ST2 not? I can't imagine the extra ram causing more heat. Do they have different PSUs? I would consider either pulling the plug ...

Re: Best atari computer for midi / cubase?

The Blitter certainly makes a big difference with Cubase. Not sure about the FPU for MIDI although it definitely makes a huge improvement with audio. The DMA chip for sound I gather takes the strain away from the CPU, but apart from enthusiasts like myself not many people would want to mess with 8 ...

Please PM

Thank you.
