Re: BeeKey Atari on a key and now BeePi

Just to let you know I installed Beekey on my laptop and so far I am very happy with it. How you made it look and work so good is beyond me, but I really liked it. My only problem was that there was no wifi support from the start, but that was easily fixed by using network manager. This is what I di...

Re: MINT: We don't make this easy do we?

Ha, I thought most people just did some CSS layout tweaks and used Wordpress. At least that's what the web dev guy I know does. But I agree, most web designers don't actually deal directly with html code these days. That's because they are graphic artists with no coding background gone web designer...

Re: MINT: We don't make this easy do we?

web designers are just designers so they design webpages... with content tools that drag & drop components to put together a web page. they do not code web page html any more. just like you go to subway and they put together a sandwich for you, they do not do the cooking. That is absolutely not...

Re: The game is on (can we make MiNT/TOS this pretty?)

Wait, what? That doesn't look anything like Gnome Shell. AmiDock has been around for a long long time, and it's just a Dock, like any other dock out there. Though to be fair, Gnome did try to take some interesting 'features' from the Amiga, like the Spatial Nautilus that everyone hated. Still hard ...

Re: The game is on (can we make MiNT/TOS this pretty?)

So, why would anyone make anything that looks like Gnome Shell is beyond me. That Amiga desktop is really coarse (if that's the correct term) and all the icons are huge. The usable screenspace is also minimised by all the stuff running on screen. Most of them you don't need anyway. It's no wonder th...

Re: Call for (not so technical) questions -- Atari's product manager 1991-96

Does he still own an atari machine? Did he think that 32 - 24 years later there would still be a fanbase? Were they hopeful that the falcon would take off or did they just release it? How was it like working at Atari back then? Did they use Ataris for their work? If so, what software did they use? O...

Re: Which direction retro computing goes ?

Well, to me it's more about the experience. You can have a similar experience when running a clone or an fpga recreation but not when using an emulator. With the emulator you can switch to the host OS any time, and you will do it. With the fpga you get a similar experience (as long as the compatibil...

Re: A good & working net browser?

I wish there was a good coder out there that could make a 16/256 colour netsurf happen. It would breath new life into our old machines. By making them insufferably slow? Don't get me wrong. I like Netsurf and it is probably fast compared to other current browsers but on my Firebee it is so slow I b...

Yeah, the STFM was funny. What I liked was the cyber sculpt 3d illustrations for various things. That was kind of modern.

Thanks for the upload.

Re: MSTE screen flickering after being ran for awhile

Hmm, new issue noticed. While playing mods or any dma sounds I get a loud hiss on the speakers that doesn't appear to be happening when I play YM audio. So I suspect the issue is also affecting DMA audio. I can't remember if this was happening before I replaced the Shifter, but I suspect not. Also u...

Re: MSTE screen flickering after being ran for awhile

@exxos: yes it's possible that there might be some bad caps, if they can cause the shifter to overheat. @siriushardware: The plug was the first thing I checked, and I've used two different cables (composite and scart) so I've plugged it in and out quite a few times. The new shifter chip made the mac...

Re: MSTE screen flickering after being ran for awhile

OK, new blog entry: I got a new shifter and it works! But I've isolated the problem to overheating since I get some flickering (much less severe than the previous one) only when the case is closed. An open case alleviates the symptoms. So I need to find what causes the system to overheat. Looking fo...

Re: MSTE screen flickering after being ran for awhile

Update, I thought it might be the shifter overheating so I decided to check by putting a heatsink over it. If it took longer to cause the issue, I would have found the culprit. However, the machine never started after that. It powers on but all I get is a black screen and a buzzing sound from the mo...

MSTE screen flickering after being ran for awhile

Hi,
I've got this issue with my mste. After I run it for a few minutes (15-20) the image starts flickering left and right (but not up and down). Any idea what it might be? Also, it seems like my cache chips have an issue since the machine halts when I turn them on.
Thanks in advance.

Re: WIFI for all ataris over serial!

I am pretty sure you can get 38400 with HSMODEM. Anyway, excellent work, this is my next atari project! Any suggestion on where to get the parts etc? Also, is it too hard to make the connections? What is the maximum speed of the device (my MSTE has a VME serial port that IIRC can do 232KBps). And, I...

Re: WIFI for all ataris?

If you turn off images, which won't look good on an atari anyway you can browse on 10KB/s. 2G on mobiles will try to load a lot more files, such as JS, Fonts etc, which won't work on the atari anyway, so the website becomes a lot smaller than what you'd get on a modern system. Using highwire you wil...

There is Freedos and Freegem for that though. They need a 16-bit DOS environment, and therefor don't run anymore on modern OS. Only solution i could get them to work is by using dosbox on linux. I am not sure how compatible to TOS/GEM the functions etc are but from what I read, porting applications...
