Re: Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

Thanks! Reading up about the 68k swap instruction for fixed point and figuring it out that way really helped (was doing Bresenham-type scaling before and turns out that's not really the way to go). It's about a third of a VBL at the moment but that's because I haven't quite got my head around using ...

Re: Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

Changed the mixing to multiplexed 50kHz and added a handful of effect commands, sounds a lot cleaner now! It's really nice having the space in the YM channels to add very lengthy echo notes.

Now "just" to write an editor...

Re: Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

You're right, wavetable stuff is pretty fascinating. The way I'm mixing is with the usual approach of writing 500 double-buffered bytes and switching/restarting DMA per VBL, using a scale table for the tuned channels and incrementally stepping through the PCM data for the drums. Going with the appro...

Re: Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

Cheers guys! Looking forward to hearing what it's capable of in the hands of the talented Atari chip musicians :) Wouldn't imagine it's an easy case of dropping support for additional channels into existing editors so I'll need to spin one of my own at some point. FedePede, that Enduro music sounds ...

Re: Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

I spotted the Arkos stuff as I was working on this and wondered the same! Haven't checked it out yet but it would be cool to use it, at the moment I'm coping with creating pattern data as blocks of dc.b but that's going to be a pain before too long and I'm not savouring the thought of having to writ...

Turbochip - 7-channel YM+DMA replay

Not sure if this ought to go into the YM or Digital subforum because it's a bit of both. I've started work on a 7-channel sound routine that uses DMA audio to play 3 channels of 256-byte wavetable data with variable pitch and 1-channel of fixed-pitch full-size samples (for drums and that) alongside ...

Re: Atari ST Game Sound FX Sample Archive?

Great to know about this. I've tried importing the memory dump into audacity as raw data, both 8bit signed & unsigned, but I tend to get a 2-10 second clip of white noises'. You will also need to experiment with the sample rate. If you're only getting a few seconds of noise then you're probably...

I've included a disk image in our database entry: http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-st-klax_31965.html Sweet! Glad you're all enjoying it :) EDIT - might be worth sticking AtariZoll's Falcon patch in with the .zip and mentioning that KLAXFALC.TOS needs to be dragged into the patch file, KLAXFALC...

Memory dump from emulator then load as 8-bit RAW (you'll need to try both signed and unsigned) in Audacity?

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

Good one, nice work!! Re: the samples. The original arcade sounds are only ~6750Hz anyway so there's not that much loss converting them to 6258Hz nor much gain in upsampling them to 12517Hz (I'm not really savouring the thought of cutting and resampling them again either! The original goal was...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

Okay - I think this is the final revision (unless there is anything else that needs to be done to make it totally Falcon compatible - do I need to set 8MHz and turn cache off or anything too?). Falcon version doubles the samples in RAM once they're loaded to create 12kHz versions. Going through thin...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

I'll have a go at sticking in 12.5kHz samples in sometime. Am I right in thinking the Falcon doesn't need to have the values written to the YM volume registers lowered because the balance between YM+DMA in the Falcon is correctly done?

Glad you're enjoying it bjkock!

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

Checked that new exec (at top of DL in first post) - and it seems that is OK. Installed some 300KB RAMDISK before starting it, what should be even more than what Hddriver takes on 4MB machine - worked fine :D Hoorah! Thanks for testing it :D I take on-board the stuff you say about relocation and th...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

Think I may have cracked it, in the .TOS version I have a small bit of code that loads all the code+data in one go, disables interrupts, copies the game from wherever it is currently into memory starting at $400 (as that's where the original game expects it to be) then jumps to $400. I think it's mo...

Re: Klax - STE DMA sound patch

I have disabled the Auto folder on the HD and no ACC or other programs are running in the background, so the STE is “clean”. It seems that the Game somehow uses the same DMA routines as the HD and therefore it hangs when it tries to start the sound with the HD on. Any clue to what the problem could...

Re: Going into demo creation in 2017?

Nothing wrong with using cross-development tools in my opinion, back in the day a lot of games were developed on cross-dev systems so it's not a new thing, just that the tools have changed. It's more about the end result and learning about the ST that matters rather than how you do it, and doesn't m...
