Re: Falcon Troubles

You only need pin 2, 3 and gnd. Pin 2 and 3 should be crossed, so pin 2 is pin 3 on the other end and vice versa. If you have 2 working computers with serial ports you can test it by connecting them together and opening a terminal emulator on each one. Keystrokes you input on one computer should dis...

Re: Falcon Troubles

I kind of like Brad. He's okay. Emailing him is like going back to the 1990's which I also enjoy (sorry that's OT as well) He's old, very quirky, doesn't like MasterCard or Paypal but once you pay him he's actually very good. He also sends packages in a recycled Lynx box with Atari factory tape seal...

Ouch! You're going to be in strife if you end up needing a custom IC for that Falcon! :(

Thanks everyone for helping.

Why are you ordering from the UK? You are less than an hour's drive from BeST Electronics!

Re: Falcon Troubles

What is 8N1? The only null-modem cable I have is a F-DB25 to F-DB9. I have no gender changer. I have a F-DB9 to M-DB25 serial I can use a gender changer. But this setup will only connect the modem ports. It's often easier (and cheaper) just to make your own. You only need tx, rx and gnd. The contro...

I only mention it because I was silly enough to mix them up the other day and it took me ages to realise what I'd done wrong. Ended up having to flash new ones 'cos I couldn't work out which was which

Re: Falcon Troubles

For some reason the server is not letting me upload photos right now, but I found another thread that goes into a bit more detail and also has the rom files.

Re: Falcon Troubles

The Falcon diag needs 512k roms. If you have the oem Atari cartridge (C070208) then you'll need to make some minor modifications such as move vpp and add a little bit of logic to drive ce. When I find my cartridge I'll send you some close up photos. I'll have a hunt around for those rom bins as well.

Re: Falcon Troubles

With all due respect, it helps a lot if you don't go reaching for those Lattice chips just yet. If you do, label them with a fine tipped paint pen. U62, U63, U67, U68. It's easy to garble them up in the wrong positions and then you're busy chasing two possible faults and you'll go crazy. :D

Re: Falcon Troubles

Cool! So firstly, you can plug your probe into the left most BNC on the scope and clip the other end of the probe to pin 23 on the Falcon's 50 pin expansion connector (just count 12 pins from the left on the bottom row) this is the CPU clock from combel. If you have an earth clip on your probe you c...

Don't be scared of your scope. I know some models can look a bit intimidating but they're actually really easy to use. If you post a photo of it I'll guide you through it. :) I need to remove the NVram RTC chip. Will a falcon boot without one of these installed? Thanks Only if you have TOS 4.04 Chee...

Re: Cursed Falcon?

I may have sent myself into an unreasonable state of panic. (I really need to stop playing with these Falcons, it isn't healthy) but after a good sleep and a day at work I remembered that I was swapping GALs out from one board to the other, and I've probably muddled them. The "cursed" Falc...

Re: Cursed Falcon?

You did not flip CT60 - F030 mobo power pigtail wrong by any chance, did you? It's a CT60e. I do have one of the older CT60's but I was so paranoid about this happening that I polarised the connector by using one out of an old floppy drive. The 68030 in the cursed machine looks to have been replace...

Cursed Falcon?

Hi. Okay so I got a Falcon with a dead board. The master clock wasn't working. I patched L102 to DSP clock and it started to "sort of" work. It attempts to start but reset goes low ever 4 seconds. I grabbed the CT60e out of a working Falcon and put it in the dead one to see if I could bypa...

Re: Did Atari change the ST's case colour or paint formula?

They might have changed the colour for the Mega STE and Falcon, but I'm sure the exact formulation is long gone. The story goes that Atari mixed their own master batches as it's cheaper. The components and additives can be solid pellets and don't always mix well, in addition there is another story t...

Re: Falcon floppy drive connector broken

For THT stuff I use a good iron and vacuum desoldering station. Fill it full of lead based solder with your soldering iron and then suck it all out with vacuum desolder station. It sometimes takes several goes to get it out. Don't force it as you can easily pull a trace off. You can awalys fix that ...

Would there be enough interest to crowd-source the funds required to buy the production files and rights from the current owner and put them in the open source community where they belong?

Re: New SuperVidel & some ideas for future development.

If I may suggest, try to talk to Nature team, perhaps they would eventually agree to release their design files to public. I know instream, who is by the way following this topic as far as I know, is a very pleasant person to talk to. Didn't Willy buy the licensing rights from Nature? I'm glad some...

Re: Falcon works in 060(CT63)mode, but black screen in 030 mode

If it helps, I have a Falcon that won't start in 030 mode. CT60 is fine. I'm convinced that it's because I'm using an after-market RTC that has given me nothing but trouble. I have some Dallas RTC's on order and I'll fit them without sockets, the way they were intended to fit. I don't know why I wan...

Probably not a very interesting question but I've always been curious to know what the hand written code on the ST shifter shield means. Most (if not all) of the ones I've ever seen simply say "BURS"

Has BadMood gone stale?

Hi, Does anyone know what's happening with BadMood? I know there are other alternatives. And if I really wanted to play Doom I could use a 486, an emulator or even my NeXT (if I want to play without sound or colour) but I really love BadMood. I love the intro graphics and the music. I also like the ...
