Re: 1040STE - Cold state issues

One thing I still need to do just take one simm stick and test the computer this way, 1MB at the time and see if it makes a difference. You can't test simms on an ST one at a time due to the way it banks its memory - one simm is only half a bank of memory. You have to use them in pairs (it just won...

Re: 1040STE - Cold state issues

could be a failing ram chip. iirc you can run a ste with 2mb ram using slots 1 and 3. if you then swap simms around it should let you identify if you have a bad simm.

on bbc micro too (little bit of extra hardware ;) ); https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYb7XjnMsaA SOTB might look pretty but its a crap game, I think the Atari lynx has the most playable version (and no minute wait to read the same message whenever you change zones) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nL...

I'm not bothered about the mouse being PS/2; quadrature is fine, I just want a cheap solution to a broken keyboard.

Re: Corrupt Newdesk.inf help

Im sure I can sort it out ok, but would rather have as much info on the subject as possible, as blindly ripping parts out caused crashed desktops with bombs. In general you're not supposed to edit INF files directly. :-) The white space at the end of (some of) the lines in the INF file is significa...

Re: Corrupt Newdesk.inf help

nice info, came across this thread trying to get rid of the damn cross hatch pattern on newdesk.inf for low/med resolutions as it looks really ugly on my CRT (#Q 41 40 43 40 43 40 -> #Q 41 40 73 70 73 70)

Re: 520ST External Floppy only

AFAIK all ST's have a WD1772 FDC which can use DSDD drives. My external Cumana floppy has no extra circuitry it's just a Chinon 354 floppy and a psu. 14 pins of the drive connector are wired directly to the 14 pin DIN plug. Re: IBM formatted diskettes?

might depend what drive you're using whether a HD formats as DD, but i've found them unreliable - maybe write ok, maybe work ok for a while, but become corrupt fairly quickly.

tbh with gotek drives available the urge to use 20+yo floppies in 20+yo drives is a bit masochistic.

Re: any one use both Atari and Amiga

I remember that when I was a child, we had both Atari and Amiga... But it felt like, you know, mixing Pepsi with Coke. :P So we got rid of Atari (it was older) and Amiga became my first gaming love. I only had Amiga 500 Plus - but I don't own it anymore. So... If you would have to recommend a simil...

Wanted: STF/FM/E Keyboard

got a cheap stfm but the keyboard is goosed - the central support post has punched a hole through the pcb. i took it to bits to have a look and someones already had a go at fixing it - soldered a load of thick wires to bridge tracks, plus peeled a few tracks off the pcb... i guess its still bordelin...

some monitors will accept a 15khz (low/med res) RGB signal via the 15-pin VGA connector (I have an acer that does) - it will display low/med or high res depending on how the cable is wired.

you can rewire an e-cheetah ps2 optical mouse without any extra components https://www.ballicom.co.uk/-ms-04-ps2-.p886897.html desolder the ps2 cable and use two of the 4 pins; vc-5v vs-GND solder rmb and lmb to appropriate switch pins - ie the pins that don't share a common connection and whose tra...

Re: R-Type Deluxe screenshots.

Looks nice. I'd prefer keeping the ST chip music and just have smoother scrolling as STE enhancement, but then I've got the arcade PCB to play the proper version on anyway ;) R-Type was the game that blew me away on the ST, I saved up for a 1MB upgrade just to play it, even if it is only marginally ...

Re: Interested in new hardware? FLoppy drive adaptors and power supplies

can you run 2 floppies off the internal miggy/st connector like a PC? i'd be up for an adaptor that does that, preferably with a flip switch to swap df0 and df1 around. then I could run a gotek floppy and a real floppy and boot off either.

I've done something like this before. Only with a lot less thinking before I acted. Needless to say you have a better result. How did you deal with the back of the keyboard? I remember mine being really wobbly like that - before I eventually gave up and put it in a normal STE case. I think moving t...
